Abstract

School learning is an essential activity when it comes to acquiring a foreign language like French. It allows the learners to acquire salient skills with the aim of positively influencing their environment. Teaching French as a foreign language (FFL) in an English-speaking environment like Nigeria is not really a very easy task due to the challenges of lack of motivation and discouragement on the part of parents and friends result in this pedagogical activity. In this paper, the researchers attempt to evaluate the attitude of J.S.S 3 students in two secondary schools (AR Best Grade Academy-AR BGA and Adeola Odutola College-AOC) in Ijebu-Ode regarding the teaching and learning of French. This research was able to foreground Skinner's theory of behaviourism with the aim of studying the behaviour of these students towards French studies and how to academically enhance their performance in the target language. A total of forty (40) questionnaires were administered as twenty (20) respondents from each of these schools were randomly sampled in order to explore their areas of poor performance. Recommendations were provided at the end of this research in order to guarantee an effective teaching of French by language facilitators in secondary schools.
