Abstract

This paper covers the far-reaching view of research and development in communication strategies (CSs) over the years and confines to the Asian region. For this review, the empirical and non-empirical research papers from 1970-2022 were reviewed to identify the CSs employed by Asian English speakers and the frequency of use of these CSs. The review shows that Asian English speakers use strategies such as paraphrasing, compensation, avoidance strategies and others. Hence, avoidance strategies are found to be the most frequent. Studies from English as a second language (ESL) and foreign language countries have been reviewed considering the Asian context. Moreover, the review revealed that CSs used by Asian English speakers are similar to native speakers. However, ESL speakers use more strategies than native English speakers. Another perspective identified is that using CSs is unconscious among novice English language learners. Furthermore, the review indicates that English language learners naturally use various CSs, but they are unaware of how to use them effectively. Hence, it is suggested to incorporate the teaching of CSs in English language pedagogy to inform English language learners about the correct use of CSs.
